Startup Programs: What You Should Disable (And What You Shouldn't)
What's Actually Going On?
- Symptom: PC takes forever to boot, or feels sluggish immediately after login.
- Cause: Too many programs auto-start with Windows.
- Risk level: Low → mostly annoying, but disabling wrong apps can break functions.
Step 1: Open Task Manager
- Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Startup apps tab → sort by "Start-up impact". (If like on mine, these are Not measured for some apps, sort by Status and get Enabled first)
Step 2: Decide What to Disable
- Safe to disable: Spotify, Discord, Steam, Adobe Updater
- Leave alone: Security software, touchpad drivers, GPU drivers
Step 3: Disable & Reboot
- Right-click → Disable → Reboot → hopefully notice improved boot time
What You Should Not Do
- Disable unknown entries - may stop hardware or Windows features from working
- Remove items via registry - unnecessary and risky
Final Thoughts
- Startup optimization is one of the easiest ways to speed up Windows.
- Focus on high-impact, safe programs first.
