When setting up Windows 11, you are pushed toward a Microsoft account.
But what changes? - Is it better than a local account? - What are the trade-offs?
Microsoft Account
- Syncs settings across devices - including themes, passwords, and language preferences
- Syncs Edge passwords - your saved passwords in Microsoft Edge are available on all devices
- Stores BitLocker recovery key online - on your Microsoft account's security page
- Allows Microsoft Store access - download apps and games from the Microsoft Store
- Enables OneDrive integration - seamless cloud storage and file syncing
Password for your PC can be reset online if you forget it, and your settings and data can sync across devices.
However, it also means more integration with Microsoft's ecosystem and potential privacy trade-offs.
Local Account
- No cloud syncing - but you have full control over your data
- No automatic BitLocker key upload - your BitLocker recovery key is stored locally only
- Works fully offline - no internet connection required for most tasks
- Password reset is local only - you must remember your password or have a recovery method in place
More isolated. Less integrated.
What do I personally use?
I use a Microsoft account, mostly to keep track of my Windows license key, which is linked to my Microsoft account. This allows me to easily recover it if I ever need to reinstall Windows.
I only sync settings across devices, as I do not trust any browser to hold my passwords securely, and I prefer to manage them with a dedicated password manager.
I even use separate themes on my computers, so this is not why I use it either.
I just like the convenience of having my license key linked to my Microsoft account for easy recovery. Plus, it holds the BitLocker recovery key, which adds an extra layer of security for my encrypted drives.
Lastly, I use it for the sake of my laptop and Surface, as have
Find My Device enabled.
Stop Using Microsoft Account
To stop using the Microsoft account, you can do the following:
- Open
Settings
- Navigate to
Accounts
- Click
Your Info
- Click on
Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Microsoft account if:
- You use multiple devices
- You want automatic backup of keys
- You use OneDrive
Choose local account if:
- You want minimal cloud integration
- You manage backups yourself
- You prefer full separation of your data from Microsoft's ecosystem
What You Should Not Do
- Do not assume Microsoft account equals less privacy automatically - configuration matters.
- Do not forget your local account password - recovery is much harder.
- Do not switch account types without understanding what will sync.
What You Can Take Away
- Both account types are valid.
- The difference is cloud integration and syncing.
- Choose based on how you use your PC.
Final Thoughts
The choice between a Microsoft account and a local account depends on your preferences for cloud integration, syncing, and privacy. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision that best suits your needs and how you use your PC.
