Gamma Control 6 "Phoenix" Release

A new, optimized version of Gamma Control has been released! After a few years off, Gamma Control is back. And yes, it's still the same lightweight tool you remember - only slightly more... Phoenix-y... Before we dive in - Thank you to every one for the loyal support of Gamma Control over the years! I love hearing from you, and I have received countless appreciation emails. Thank you!

History

As per a previous post, Gamma Control was discontinued as of 1st of January 2020, which calls for the PHOENIX codename of this 6th version of Gamma Control.

Why I stopped

It discontinued for several reasons...:
  1. Windows Update that messed up how the gamma could be adjusted on multiple screens
  2. False positives on anti-virus software - a constant battle to flag false positives to AntiVirus companies
  3. Less time on my hands to maintain the software, as I had to deal with the above

Why bring it back?

I have received several emails over the past few years, since the discontinuation. People wanted a newer version of Gamma Control, or asking for the source code. A quick look online showed many people still using old Gamma Control versions - and more people are asking for this lightweight, easy to use tool. That is also why it is named Phoenix, as it has risen from the ashes.

What's changed in Gamma Control 6?

Not a lot from version 5...
  1. It's the same good little piece of software that uses nearly no resources on your system.
  2. All ads have been removed from v4
  3. Runs on .NET Framework 8.0 (officially Windows 10/11, but might work on Windows 7/8—though no promises).
  4. Since v4, you may now create various profiles for your key-bindings as in v5

Will I need a license?

No, Gamma Control 6 "Phoenix" is 100% free. No license, no paywall, no ads, no forced donations, no nothing.

What about the AV companies?

So... The software went through a bit of a makeover, and the old hook, that primarily caused the issue is gone and all keypresses and registers are now handles by native functions that should not as easily flag false-positive.

Migrating from Gamma Control 5

If you are migrating from Gamma Control 5 and you want to ensure you keep your profiles, you can backup the profilemanager folder in %APPDATA%\DesktopNerds\GammaControl, and put it back after the update (to ensure it's not overwritten during installation of new version). Make sure NOT to get version.ini, versionupdate.ini and settings.ini files, leave the new one in - Delete them if anything. Let the new version blossom

So how does it look?

Main window - Still clean, still simple

Options - Easily tweak without digging through complex menus
